“Sus­tain­abil­ity seems to be the buzz­word in both fash­ion and beauty these days. The bur­geon­ing de­mand for eth­i­cally made prod­ucts has pro­pelled brands to re­think their business mod­els. Es­tab­lished last Christ­mas for the dis­cern­ing, home­grown brand Straits Skin­care worked with doc­tors and sci­en­tists to cre­ate a hand­ful of sus­tain­able and ef­fec­tive beauty prod­ucts.

Draw­ing in­spi­ra­tion from tra­di­tional Per­anakan se­crets, Straits Skin­care com­bines age-old home­made Ny­onya recipes passed down by gen­er­a­tions, mak­ing use of lo­cal in­gre­di­ents that have been used ex­ten­sively for their cu­ra­tive and pro­tec­tive prop­er­ties. Three prod­ucts, the In­vig­o­rat­ing Ginger Hand Sani­tiser, Re­fresh­ing Jasmine Hand Sani­tiser, Sooth­ing Plan­tain Face Toner, are con­ceived with­out com­pro­mis­ing the health of the planet and hu­mans.

Per­pet­u­at­ing the no­tion of sus­tain­abil­ity, the lo­cal-based brand pack­aged its prod­ucts in re­us­able and re­cy­clable ma­te­ri­als. As an in­cen­tive, it of­fers re­duced prices for cus­tomers who choose the ‘No Pack­ag­ing’ op­tion.”
